Sipsey Wilderness in the Bankhead National Forest Hiking Trail Bird Watching Wildlife Trail Scenic Trail Wild-flowing creeks in northwestern Alabama converge to form the Sipsey River, 61 miles of which are designated Wild and Scenic. Here you'll find some of the state's last stands of virgin timber, sinkholes and small caves, towering bluffs, and the rare flattened musk turtle. Several good loop hikes depart the Sipsey River Recreation Site on the wilderness area's southern boundary. Contact: Bankhead Ranger District, William B. (205) 489-5111; Buck Tilton Birding: The 25,000-acre Sipsey Wilderness in the Bankhead National Forest is the second largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi. About 150 species have been documented in the vicinity, including the sharp-shinned hawk, American redstart, and black-throated green, cerulean, and black-and-white warbler. Kinlock Falls and Thompson Creek Bridge yield a spectacular landscape of cliffs, gorges, and hardwoods, with excellent birding opportunities. |

(Noccalula Road) for several miles until passing the bridge over Black Creek. The falls Visitors Center and parking lot are on the right (look for sign, very well-marked). |
